    Towards Identifying Performance Anomalies

    Get PDF
AbstractLarge-scale-software systems (LSSs) are composed of hundreds of subsystems that interact with each other in an unforeseen and complex ways. The operators of these LSSs strictly monitor thousands of metrics (performance counters) to quickly identify performance anomalies before a catastrophe. The existing monitoring tools and methodologies have not kept in pace with the rapid growth and inherit complexity of these LSSs; hence are ineffective in assisting practitioners to effectively pinpoint performance anomalies. We propose a methodology that uses entropy analysis to assist practitioners/operators of LSSs in quickly detecting underlying anomalies in the system. Our performance tests conducted on an open source benchmark system reveal that the proposed methodology is robust in pinpointing anomalies, do not require any domain knowledge to operate, and avoid information overload on practitioners

Tele-Screening, Triaging of Dental Patients, and Reopening of Dental Services During SAR-CoV2 Pandemic

Background: The nature of dental profession requires a dentist to be in a close proximity to the patient’s mouth to perform various operative treatments including procedures such as generating aerosols. As such, dentistry is considered as one of the riskiest profession for the cross-transmission of SARS-CoV2. Although the prevalence and incidence of SARS-CoV2 continue to increase worldwide; the dental services and treatment of non-emergency cases have resumed in many countries including Sudan. Moreover, the use of smartphone technology in communication with patients can play an important role in controlling the spread of SARS-CoV2. Therefore, the aim of this short review was to draw a summary on using smartphone technology for telescreening dental patients prior to their visit to the clinics and to set guidelines and rules for dental treatment during SARS-CoV2 pandemic. Methods:  For the purpose of this study, telescreening is referred as a virtual contact between patients and healthcare personnel used to provide health services during the highly contiguous SARS-CoV2 pandemic. Using a smartphone, dental patients can be screened and questioned about their medical history and particularly for SARS-CoV2 (for symptoms such as fever, headache, coughing, breath shortness, loss of smell or taste). They should also be asked about their travel history to epidemic area, visiting hospital or coming in contact with a confirmed SARS-CoV2 patient during the last 14 days. On arrival to a dental clinic, the patient's temperature should be measured, instruction for wearing masks, hand hygiene, and keeping distances from others inside the waiting zone. Conclusion: Telescreening and triaging will minimize the time of patients’ exposure to dental clinic environments, hence decreasing the risk of getting SARS-CoV2 infection for both patients and dental healthcare workers.  Keywords: COVID-19, dentistry, procedure generating aerosols, smartphone, social distance, surgical masks

    Get PDF
The present study aimed to synthesize and characterize dehydrozingerone as well as to investigate its anticonvulsant activity in experimental animals.  A simple method was used to synthesize dehydrozingerone using vanillin and acetone. The synthesized drug dehydrozingerone was characterized using thin layer chromatography (TLC), high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), infrared spectroscopy (IR) and physicochemical tests. The synthesized product was  tested for its potential anticonvulsant activity using maximum electroshock (MES) induced seizure models in rats. The synthesized dehydrozingerone showed TLC profile, FT IR spectra and HPLC chromatogram similar to the authentic sample. The physicochemical characters (colour, taste, flavour, solubility and melting point) were also similar to what was found in the literature. All these results indicated that the produced product was dehydrozingerone. A dose dependent anticonvulsant activity was produced by dehydrozingerone. Eighty percent anti-MES activity was presented by 100 mg/kg.  The findings indicated that dehydrozingerone represents a bioactive molecule possessing anticonvulsant activity. In addition, it is an easily synthesized compound from cheap starting materials. In conclusion dehydrozingerone may find its place as antiepileptic agent if further clinical studies will be conducted

AbstractCanadian healthcare is a fundamental part of society. Challenges such as the aging baby boomer generation require the healthcare industry to meet higher demands while using fewer resources. Computer systems designed to record and report physical health properties of an individual personcan be used in part to accomplish this task. In this paper, we present the architecture of a hypothetical multi-agent system designed to provide healthcare information about specific patients through continuous monitoring. The resulting data from the system is accessible by the patient to whom it belongs as well as his or her healthcare professional. Furthermore, the proposed system utilizes an adaptive user interface for the purpose of improving the overall experience for users with poor vision or motor skills. Specifically, we focus on the implementation of several of the key components involved in the adaptive user interface: learning component and the user model. To demonstrate the feasibility of the implementation two scenarios are provided. We conclude with several possible future directions for this research

The purpose of this study is to solve the problem of rain water of the area north of the Khartoum Bahri and protect the Villages from the floods, and conduct a comprehensive hydrological study of the water basins passing through that area. The methods used in this study were to collect data from different sources such as Digital Elevation Maps, Urban development maps, Rainfall data. In addition to hydrological, hydro geological studies and survey works. These data were analyzed using hydraulics equations and probability distribution functionsf(x). From the results the basins catchment drainage has been identified and planned based on hydrology, geological and topography of the area and it was found that the basins that produce the torrents, mostly located north east of the catchment, the area of these catchment is 11.5 km 2. The maximum out flow for catchment is about 138 m3/s in the central of catchment area, and is considered the best selected area for the construction of water harvesting technique. Normal distribution has been found to be the best fitted distribution for the representation of the annual rainfall in study area. Conclusion and recommendation drawn from this study is to Construct embankment or dike to prevent the water passing in the north-east direction of the study are

Evaluating of Short-Term Electrical Load Forecasting System Using Fuzzy Logic Control: A Study Case in Sudan

    Get PDF
Generation, Transmission and Distribution sections of the electric power grid system are a function of electric load forecasting. This is because, many benefits can be obtained by using load forecasting, such as reduction in the generating cost and increasing the reliability of the power system due to improving energy management. The objective of this study is therefore to design a fuzzy logic system for short-term electric load forecasting to reduce power losses particularly in times where the electric power generation is higher than the electric load demand. In this study, the independent variables that were applied to the developed short-term load forecasting Simulink model were time, temperature, and similar previous electric day load demand, and they were collected from the specific area load control center in Sudan. Fuzzy rules were prepared using Mamdani implication. The obtained fuzzy logic results were compared with the actual load demand, and it was found that there was an error that ranged between 12% and 0.09%

Abstract: Herewith we present perinatal outcome in pregnancies with ovarian cysts after fine needle aspiration in the second trimester and excision during c-section at term. Outcome was satisfactory for both maternal and fetal. 28 years primigravida presented with huge ovarian cyst, size 18 X 16 cm in her second trimester of pregnancy. The procedure was performed without anaesthesia under ultrasound guidance. Three litres were aspirated within two hours while the patient was on her right lateral position. Cytology of the aspirated fluid revealed a simple ovarian cyst and no evidence of malignancy. The pregnancy continued uneventfully. C-section was done at 37 weeks gestational age.  Ovarian cystectomy was performed. The result of histopathology was benign cystadenoma. We concluded that ovarian cyst aspiration under ultrasound guidance is simple, safe and useful in the management of ultrasonically benign ovarian cysts. We advocate using this procedure in similar situation and same characteristics

An Adaptive User Interface in Healthcare

    Get PDF
AbstractHealthcare is a broad subject with many different challenges, yet it is important and relatable to everyone. The aging Baby Boomer generation is an important healthcare issue today. In Canada, and many other developed nations, the number of citizens reaching the age of retirement and seniority is growing faster than the rate of citizens working and providing health related services. As people age they tend to require more frequent checkups and health services, ultimately putting a bigger resource drain on healthcare infrastructure. New advancements in Computer Science and Engineering are allowing the development of next generation applications with the purpose of providing healthcare services in a cost effective and efficient way. This paper proposes a multi-agent system for tracking and monitoring health data for patients. Furthermore, agents within the system use reinforcement learning techniques to build an adaptive user interface for each human user. The actions and behaviour of users are monitored and used to modify their respective user interface over time. To demonstrate the feasibility of the architecture, two scenarios are provided. We conclude with several possible future directions for this research
